The Golden Retriever has been bred to be a sociable, athletic, and intelligent animal. Being of a large size, they are happiest with a yard to roam around in; if you live in an area without a yard, they are flexible enough to be comfortable with frequent walks. The Golden Retriever is good-natured, patient, and fun-loving. As they were bred to be hunting dogs, they are often quite content to sit quietly and wait when they need to. Goldens are very outgoing dogs; they enjoy large groups of both people and dogs, and all the attention. These are lovable, well-mannered dogs with a great charm. They are easily trained and are gentle with children. Energetic and loving, Golden Retrievers enjoy pleasing their masters, so obedience training can be very rewarding. They excel in competitions. The Golden Retriever has very little, if any, guarding instincts. While unlikely to attack, Goldens make good watchdogs, loudly signaling a stranger's approach. They also love to swim.
